Clear Spot was first released as a 12-track vinyl in the UK between Aug & Sept 1972 as K 54007 (MS 2115). As MS 2115 in the USA. (DJ single USA promo pack for the album: Clear Spot).

The vinyl was either 'loose' or contained in a white poly-lined wallet, at the outlet's discretion. This was contained in a specially-produced clear plastic wallet with a 'Clear Spot' logo embossed on the flap. Within this was a 2-sided white card insert with black & white print - photo on front, credits on reverse. No 'Clear Spot' logo appeared on this insert. The release package in this form, with minor variations (such as insert being 2 pieces, glued back-to-back as one) and with respective catalog IDs, was issued in Australia, Canada, France (one-sided insert), Germany & the USA.

By the close of 1972 the 'limited quantity' of embossed wallets had expired. The 2nd issue did not have embossing and the 'Clear Spot' logo was printed on a white reissue cover (Grey, Black or Pale Blue; Depending upon country or reissue dates throughout vinyl's history). The 2nd issue labels in the UK ('mustard' rather than light brown) also had the addition of the small Warner logo & a new text layout (containing literals). "8-track" editions, with re-ordered titles, appeared in the UK, USA & Canada in 1972. Cassettes also exist, together with a 1972 issue 7" reel recording. Since 2000 'specialist' vinyl has been produced of this release. It has also been 'paired' as a 'double release' with other Beefheart recordings over the years, most notably with "The Spotlight Kid".

"Her Eyes Are A Blue Million Miles" is in the soundtrack of the 1998 film 'The Big Lebowski'.

Engineer Donn Landee was nicknamed "Mit" during recording because, in Vliet's words,"...he caught everything we threw at him"*.

The insert photo was taken in the control center of the Planetarium of Griffith Park Observatory, Los Angeles, California. The last line of "Golden Birdies", in typical Vliet spontaneity, references the Webcor.

Phenomenal pressing! Really good dynamics and great separation on the many instruments and percussion. If you're a fan of Beefheart, this album is a must—more commercial than Trout Mask, but by no means uninteresting. This release is amazing overall—grab one if you can!

i ve been streaming this album to get into it but some tracks were almost unrecognisable as they were so 3D and immersive on vinyl

This is a gem of an album and am fortunate to have taken a chance when numerous critics have called it his most commercial album. Commercial for Captain Beefheart is still in the Earth's upper atmosphere, but yet far out. So many great cuts--Low Yo Yo Stuff, My Head Is My Only House Unless It Rains, Clear Spot, Her Eyes Are A Blue Million Miles, Big Eyed Beans From Venus, and Golden Birdies which was performed on German TV in 1972. https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x656bnv Most of the songs are from The Spotlight Kid, but they are nothing short of amazing!

This might seem kinda silly but I truly believe this should get a repress on clear vinyl as was originally intended (according to Zoot Horn Rollo in his book 'Lunar Notes')

The original issue with the plastic sleeve and 'Clear Spot' embossing would have benefitted immeasurably with a clear vinyl pressing. Apparently Reprise were too cheapskate to pay for it. Having said that - clear vinyl can be inferior to black so maybe it all worked out for the best in the end... although the package would have looked good (perhaps a bit like the first Faust album).

Will someone please post the Rhino Records CD Cat# R2 2115!!!

Anyone else have a problem with the download card? The download doesn't have any tracks from side B, instead it's side A with a bunch of alternative takes.

"Clear Spot" - one of the more 'accessible' albums of Beefheart's career - radically packaged for its time in a 'Clear Spot' embossed clear wallet, with an insert and no vinyl liner. Looking rather like a 'black spot in a polyethylene bag' and soon replaced by a standard sleeve. Even on release, some outer wallets had splits or creases and, almost 40 years later, it is becoming harder to find clean un-yellowed copies. It was also mooted that the vinyl should also be clear, but this was shelved as being 'cost-prohibitive'.

The album opens with "Low Yo Yo Stuff", a number written and rehearsed back in "Spotlight Kid" days and a line used later to title Anton Corbijn's documentary "Some YoYo Stuff". Then "Nowadays A Woman's Gotta Hit A Man" keeps up the pace, although I'm not sure male pre-occupation is a bad thing, if that's what Don's suggesting here. There's an interesting horn arrangement by producer Templeman and Vliet, along with assured slide-guitar work from Harkelroad.

Things slow down on "Too Much Time", which was used as a promo & single release. About as slushy and sentimental as a mid-sixties pop song. With Jerry Jumonville horn arrangements, Cooder's brother-in-law Russ Titelman guesting on guitar and The Blackberries' Stax-style backing vocals, it's sticky enough to seal a love-letter. "Circumstances" then hits it for me, lyrically and musically a 'modern blues' gem, with heart-stopping breaks and changes of pace. I think the following "My Head Is My Only House Unless It Rains" is a little lost - which it was, on the flip-side of the single. Don lays down some imagery as the band plays, but I think he should have sold this one to Van Morrison. "Sun Zoom Spark" definitely gets back in the groove. Pure magic n' magnetism, with that 'zippin' guitar to end side one.

Side two opens with the album's title track and Don running "...to find a clear spot", with brilliantly 'eerie' guitar work from Harkelroad. "Crazy Little Thing" has some elegant drum work by Tripp and Boston's incomparable bass drives things along with Milt Holland's added percussion. Nice sexy touch from The Blackberries' vocals too. "Long Neck Bottles" lopes along in solid blues style and into "Her Eyes Are A Blue Million Miles". One of my favorite romantic songs by Vliet and used on the film soundtrack of "The Big Lebowski". Is it about a girl, or an ode to the expanses of the ocean? (Or "oceands", as Don would have it). Then we have "Big Eyed Beans From Venus". I think I'd like to have this played at my funeral. With the knob set at 11. "Man, let your waters flop out..."

Finally, there's "Golden Birdies". Echoes of 'Decals' days and the Winged Eel. What more can be said? If only Don had "Let go flocks" of albums like this, who knows if he would have quacked it? Webcor... Webcor...
